I have TX2z.
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core RM-74 2.2 GHz
ATI Radeon HD3200
4.00 GB installed "crucial"
64 bit
With windows Vista ultimate installed.
I'm having the black screen boot up issue. Lights on. fan on.Sounds on. Only on a restart or full boot.... Disconnecting power + battery and Pressing power button repeatedly... will normally Get me running again.... or never shut it off.... Zero issues with sleep or Hibernation....
Research commonly says its my Graphics Card.... Research also says its ancient 2009 or older substandard design.... slow. slow. slow.
Question: Since I have to have the Graphics Card removed & resoldiered?
why Can't I replace with a more current faster nice one... ? And what one would be the easiest/best?
I'm not a rocket scientist.... Trying to learn and understand....
My Concerns would be if it would plug n play? Heat issues? Compatibility? Stability issues. not burn up other components.... would current BIO setting work? would the option of overclocking be reasonable or Smart. Replacing the slow toshiba hard drive is happening soon.... Crucial recommends the wd blue hdd 1 tb sata-600. . . On paper it seems 2x faster than my current. Or maybe the Crucial M500 240GB 2.5-inch Internal SSD. . . I lose a few Gigs but dramatic improvements everywhere.
I deeply enjoy this TX2z. I truly enjoy the stability of the 64 bit Vista ultimate.... Fixing. improving. Modding is my only desire.
I don't understand pin connectors. connectability .. Voltage inputs... Voltage outputs. Requirements.... Any Guidance would be appreciated.... any Guidance to a Reputable intelligent Place in IOWA to have my board rebuilt would help alot.... I would love to hear from someone smarter than me. ...I'm ln over my head.

The primary issue with attempting to upgrade your graphics is lack of support from HP. You would likely be looking at a minimum of modding the BIOS (HP still uses "white lists"). I might suggest looking into DIY reflowing but I'm thinking some (more than one) of the capacitors on your motherboard are probably in need of replacement also. If not wanting to tackle that, you'll need to find an independent shop that will repair laptops (if considering sending it off for repair, research the crap out of the firm you send it off to). I'm also thinking that most every repair shop is going to want to swap out the motherboard rather than troubleshoot it and likely none will even attempt an upgrade (there's nothing in it for the shop except possible headaches). HP doesn't even go as far as giving options for a CPU upgrade.
Although I don't see how it can help, your Maintenance and Service Guide can be found here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03182908.pdf (direct pdf link)
Hope it helps some

I'm starting to think your very likely correct. I'm still hoping otherwise. I've seen the youtube videos of re-flowing.... not thrilled with that idea.. I was really hoping for a remodded board... hoping for leaded soldier Vs nonleaded. And better copper shims & top Quality thermal paste....
I am very curious why you are thinking capacitors...?
If your correct?... I have to rethink my whole idea on just a Graphic Card.
It does run fantastic. . . sleep. Hibernation. Switching Users. everything... Only a restart or shutdown causes black screen.... Removing Power & Battery.... Long repeated depressing of power button... then reestablish power.... it boots up fine.... All the so called built in self checks come back 100%. .
And the link you provided is Greatly appreciated....
it actually shows the offered components from the factory.... shows that I could upgrade to the AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology Ultra Dual-Core ZM-86 (2.40-GHz,thats a Significant improvement over my AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology Dual-Core RM-74 (2.20-GHz, my L2 cache would double. . . thank you very much again.... Walking out door now... when I get time I will look closer at the Link you provided...

I should add... On a black screen reboot.... All the normal lights come on in the normal fashion.. . The dealing fan comes on normal.... It cycles up as it, B under heavy load and then calms down in the normal fashion.... The windows splash screen noise comes on in the normal timeframe.... Have you ever noticed a micro-flash of lighter colored black when powering up? Before the normal boot up screen actions?
If I get the micro-flash? I know its gonna boot.... No micro flash? I Know its time to do a restart again.

Sorry. Writing tablet cant read my handwriting when I rush.... I meant Cooling fan. . .. and cycles up as if its under heavy load and then calms down in the normal fashion

The little flash of light you describe comes after the BIOS selection screen but before the OS loads is that correct?
Okay I'm going to look at a different tack here - has the tablet ever been opened and physically cleaned? If not I will suggest that since it may very well be solution here. This video seems to be the most complete I've found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLWromDVwlE for disassembly (although they do not cover the cable connections well IMO). I might even take it a step further and suggest replacing the thermal compound (and thermal pads if any although they can be reused if one is careful with them) on the CPU here.

question: Had you installed any updates or programs just before this started occurring?

No..... I would say the microflash of Black/ grey occurs within, 2-3 seconds of pressing power.... if the flash occurs? then I can expect the screen of restart normal or safe. or the scrolling green bar. or the depress f buttons with esc.
If it micro-flashes...? I mentally think that my screen has become activated and ready.... no microflash? the screen is solid dead..... I've never Assembled it... I can't vouch for Previous.... He was a computer programmer grad from College.... Wifes laptop... But he was very bright and admitted to building personal systems... Laptop was in MINT condition.
I rarely mess with Programming... If it works? don't fix it.... And this issue began happening last fall when Work was crazy.... I hate to point fingers and be wrong. ..... If it was a update? It was Norton... All my other updates are manual.... I do know I'm very Bitter with Norton right now.... I recently did a clean reinstall into my Pavilion.... It was cleaned. fragged. disc. Registry. All updates. drivers. windows. microsoft. the full Monty... took 100 hrs... disc checks... etc... I put Norton 360 in it.... LOCKED IT SOLID. . . .20 hrs later.... Nortons is out. Laptops singing sweet... Put Norton it again.... CRASH.... Errors... Hard drive failure.... screen flashing... warnings... warnings Beeps.... drive freaking out.... I truely think its smoked this time... If a update Broke my TX2 ? it was Norton. As I said everything is manual that I'm aware of...
