Question about my on-board sound card

I'm looking to maybe getting a pair of audiophile headphones over an actual gaming headset. But don't audiophile headphones only work as well has your soundcard. Would it actually be worth still get the Audiophile phones? My MOBO is a GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H

On board sound has come along way, the only reason you would need a audio card is if you have a sound monitor.

On board sound has been good for many years now, as long as the board is decent. And yours is:

But if you want the best. Sure a great sound card for ~$200 (give or take), would be "step up".

I could get a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50S for like $100. Is that good? Know anything about them?
