Download speed/upload speed needed for gaming while downloading

I have a roommate who loves to download (streaming, direct downloads) everyday while I play online games. My current connection is 7Mbps/1up and I get lag. What would be a good connection to support downloading while gaming online?

My ISP is Teksavvy and I am on DSL with a FTTN service. My connection is made with 2 access points in bridged mode (directly to the router) so I should get pretty damn good consistency.

I'm hesitant on upgrading to a plan with 10Mbps upload speed because it requires me to buy a $120 modem. So the preferred option would be to just increase download speed (unless I really have to upgrade upload speed).

You need to think of gaming as a two way street. Not only do you have to send information to the server but the server has to send information back about the other players. You want a good ping as well as a fast up and down connection as it will help.

If you have a super fast down speed but your up speed is slow, you will get more lag or you will not do as well in the game.

The 15/10 would probably...
At least a 25Mbps down with 10Mbps up. I had that a while ago and it worked pretty well for me and my wife who both game and download but if you can get something like 50Mbps down with 15Mbps up I would go for that.

I have currently 150Mbps down with 25 Mbps up and I can game and download multiple things at the same time with no lag.

If you have cable based internet, which I doubt it and you probably have DSL, you want DOCSIS 3.0 support on your modem for channel bonding. If it is DSL then you might need a newer modem to support the higher speeds as well.

To my understanding, streaming or direct downloads only take up 'download' speeds.
How would my online gaming ping benefit from a 10Mbps or more 'upload' speed if my friend only 'downloads'?

Also, Teksavvy only offers me plans with 1Mbps upload and 10Mbps upload speeds.
I can go up to 15Mbps download speed with a 1Mbps upload speed before I have to get a new modem for VDSL service.

Teksavvy offers DSL 15/1 and DSL 15/10 (this requires new modem).
My current modem (SpeedTouch 516) can only support 1Mbps upload speed or FTTN connection.
My roommate insists he be able to do whatever he wants even when I'm gaming.

Someone tell me how $120 (new modem) will change my online gaming ping while he downloads for days.

Yes. But why not buy one. I will be keeping it until it breaks.

Also, I think I should take upload speed out of the picture because it's confusing everyone.
What Download Speeds do I need for me to game online without lag, while my roommate streams 720p.

The 15/10 would probably be better and if you get a new modem for it I would see if it has the ability to, or if you have a router, to do QoS and see if you can set it to push more speed to games than downloads.
