After a few minutes, minecraft goes from consistent 60 fps (with vsync on) to like 0.5 fps after a few minutes.
This didn't happen at all a week ago, and the last time it happened was a couple months ago.
I don't think this is a hardware or heat problem as I have a gtx 780, intel i7 4770k, 16 gigs of ram, and keep my computer nice and cool.

I can play battlefield 4 at ultra for an entire day without any problems (aside from the occasional crash) but this game has my jimmies rustled.

Can anyone give me some advice? I'd like to play the game.
Also, if it matters, I do alt+tab occasionally and I like to play youtube in the background, but I tried starting up the game without those and the issue persisted.

Open up task manager (ctrl+alt+del). Click on the processes tab. Sort by Memory. While playing minecraft do you see any program suddenly start to jump in memory when you encounter the problem?

Also, back up any server info and world data in %appdata% "Roaming" folder and uninstall Minecraft and re-install it.

Sometimes files get corrupted and cause strange issues in MC. I know this cause I currently run vanilla and technic/bukkit servers from my home PC for friends and such and every now and then a fresh install is needed server side.

I just installed a 64 bit version of java, and I think that fixed it. I think the auto download kept giving me 32 bit versions because of my browser or something.
I'm ten minutes in and haven't seen any issues. I noticed my ram usage went up from 3 gigs to 4.27, but I guess the game is utilizing more of it.
