My toshiba latop is making this very loud , sortof grinding noise. I seems to be coming from the fan but if I hold the laptop vertical, the sound stops. The fan seems to be running sat a very high speed, eventhough my system isnt overheating. ANY ADVICE ?

Does the fan speed decrease when you hold it vertically and the sound goes away?

Since the sound goes away when you hold it vertically I am guessing there is something actually grinding against the fan. This is normally some piece of dirt or hair. Try cleaning the fan (pressured air will probably work best on laptop) or if you can take it out and look at it.

Actually, if I do hold it vertically the fan is still spinning but the noise is reduced very much. Also, the sound is always there if I switch on the laptop after its been off for a longer time. Then if i turn the laptop upside down ,most of the time that quiets the fan.

It seems to me like a loose fan (the fan isn't screwed in tight enough). When you hold the laptop vertically or upside down the fan goes to the correct position, but in the regular position it slips down beating against the laptop. Again it could also be a piece of dirt but a loose fan seems more likely to me.
