I was wondering if anyone has any experience with shipping PC across the country? Technically even out of the country since the destination is in Canada Toronto and I am in California.
What is the safest way to package the computer? Should I take off the heat sink, GPU, etc? I would like most of the parts be intact since it is a custom-built computer for my friend and she doesn't know how to build one.
Should I use FedEx? UPS? etc.?
Computer is like 30-40 pounds.

hmmm, i have been in a similar situation, i moved from South Africa to Australia after just building my PC and there was no way i was leaving it behind. i did a lot of research and the most economical way was to use an "extra baggage" service, they came and collected it from my house a few days before i left, and it arrived shortly after i did, it had to clear customs first though. i undid all my cables and packed parts like the video card back into their original packaging, and took apart as much as i could and packed it separately. i still had the box from my chassis which had the polystyrene inserts, and it arrived with no hassle!

I just look up the fees to ship from USA to Canada and it easily cost over $100 with insurance. Is there any cheaper alternatives? Even from NY to Canada, Toronto cost just as much coming from California.

hmmm, $100 is quite a bit, but unfortunately i think that is the going rate... maybe even the lower end of the price scale... you could always leave all your clothes behing and just pack your pc in your bag:: :)
