I'm looking to buy my first build from PC Case Gear in a few months, and am stuck choosing between these two graphics cards.

The GTX 770 4GB OC Price's at $509

The R9 280x 3GB OC Price's at $400

Now, I know there's a huge price difference here, but here's what I'm looking to do:

If I end up going with the GTX 770, I'll be SLI'ing in the future, I'll also be purchasing a 24'' monitor due to my budget.

If I end up going with the R9 280x, I probably wont be Crossfiring, as I've heard it wasn't a great way to go, I'd probably upgrade to a higher graphics card instead. But I'll be purchasing a 27'' monitor, and I've hear the R9 280x performs better on a high-res monitor that the GTX 770.

Here are my other chosen specs:

CPU: Intel I5 4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core

CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (2x4GB)

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB OC OR R9 280x 0C 3GB

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

Case: NZXT H230 White

Power Supply: Cougar RS650 650W 80 PLUS Certified

Monitor: ASUS VE248H 24in OR ASUS VE278H 27in

If it helps, I'll be playing high-end games, like BF4, Skyrim ( w/ Graphics Mods ) and Crysis 3.

Which way should I go, R9 280x or GTX 770?

Get the GTX 770 and SLI, also those monitors have the same resolution.

they are almost identical but the 280x takes the edge at higher resolution and for cfx i think there won't be any proplems it's a bit better than 770 sli but be sure to get an aftermarket cooler not the reference one .

don't purchase a gpu with "sli/xfire" in mind "down the road". either get the 2nd gpu now, or build with one in mind. I suggest you look at a 780 or r9-290, and skip the overpriced 770 and 280x.

Depends on which games you play really.
I just sold my R9 280x since I found the GTX770 4GB to run a lot better with the games I play at 2650x1440, it might differ for you though, but there are plenty of benchmarks with different games to look at for a comparison.

Also, be sure to check manufacturer forums and user reviews at web shops, seems like a lot of brands have quality control issues with their badges of 280's atm., even my ASUS R9 280x DC2T had some really bad issue, but nothing I couldn't fix myself, plus that ASUS came with a BIOS update shortly after.
So if your not much into tech or just want to avoid RMA's it's best to snoop a bit around before ordering a new card.

My current card is a EVGA GTX770 4GB with an ACX cooler, took that one after reading recommendations here and on other forums plus that it tops out well on newegg.
