In this day and age, you should be running with no less than 3GB of RAM. What you need to purchase depends on what's currently installed (either 1x1GB DDR2-800 or 2x512MB DDR2-800). With a 1x1GB configuration, you could get along with just purchasing a 2x1GB DDR2-800 kit. The specs I found do not list a mixed configuration (using both 512MB and 1GB memory modules), but it should work. If it doesn't work, you should purchase a second kit of 2x1GB modules to give you a total of 4GB of RAM.

Your system is running slow because it doesn't have enough RAM, not because it's running Windows 7 or 8. Once the RAM upgrade is complete, upgrading to Windows 8 would provide only a marginal increase in speed and that would likely be caused by a fresh...

You'd need a minimum of 2Gb RAM to run 8 to be honest, and the same applies to Win 7, otherwise you will be constantly using your Paging File, and that really slows things down. My best advice to you would be to stick with Win 7 and spend the money on a Hybrid Drive, an SSHD. These can be obtained 500Gb for around £50, leaving you enough left to buy more RAM. (Assuming Win 8 upgrade around £80)
Best to 'Clean Install' win 7 to your new Hard Drive, if you don't have Installation disks, simply download from Digital River and create your own.
Cheapest SSHD can be had from Ebay, it's meant for Laptops but your Tower won't know the difference...

You'll more than halve your Boot time and Apps will launch instantaneously.
