Newer video card in older mobo

My friend's computer died yesterday, while we were playing GW2. He did managed to turn it on later, but it was in low resolution, and there were vibrating colorful lines on his display. After looking around we come to the conclusion, that his video card overheated, or something. Is this really a video card related problem? (his card died once a few years ago, but they fixed it in the service)
He wanted to buy a new pc later this year, but he dont have the money for the whole rig at the moment. So i told him to get the video card in advance, and the rest later. Will this new card work in this mobo?

Current rig:
Gigabyte ep45 ds5
Chieftek gps-650ab a (650watts, 2x 6pin pci ...)

The card we were thinking about:
HD 7870

edit: when he bought this rig, he had swap the video card 2 times to another manufacturer (same model) to get it work with the mobo

Best solution

a c 98 U Graphics card

then there is something wrong with the motherboard or the cards you were using as that motherboard is capable of handling any video card on the market (now of course you will be limited by cpu bottlenecks and pus capability, but it will still work unless one of the parts in the configuration is faulty).
