I dont need much of a system..I dont game on my computer any more. My motherboard however is acting up and I want to get a better one for my Phenom II 910

problem is I really dont know what is out there and since the cpu is so old already I am lost.

I know I will have to get ddr3 ram looks like cause most of the ddr2 boards I cant find.

or I can get a barebones kit for less than $200 and start over. currently using a HP prebuilt and its fine except the motherboard is pretty lame

More about : motherboard upgrade

First I'm going to question why you believe the motherboard is acting up and not some other component on it.
Second, once you go to a new motherboard, you will need a new operating system*. HP's license allows for the OS to be used on that system (motherboard) only. You can swap out every component except the motherboard and not need a new OS.

I would be thinking upgrade but HP is very tight-lipped about how to go about that. The bare-bones kit + OS may be the way to go here. But... back to your current system.
What issue(s) are you specifically having here - we can attempt to address that/them here

*unless replaced with the identical HP motherboard

See if you can find your board at pcpartpicker.com , it has a compatibility checker so you will be given mobos that should be compatible with that cpu only and if there are any hiccups it tells you what they may be (like a bios must be updated first warning for ex). I'll see what I can find for you and update this post in a few if you don't get there first.
According to newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... (no I don't work for them)
your cpu has an AM3 socket. By virtue of that just look for mobos with that socket that you like.
Before recommending a direction what is it that you need or want this cpu upgrade to do for you whether it's starting over or just replacing the mobo?

Ok, my motherboard may not be dying but sometimes my USB ports don't work.

I have read on the hp forums that this violet board is going to die sooner or later so I have been wanting to get a new better one.

OS is no issue. I'm running my own copy of windows. Never had oem hp disks.

It's a matter of finding a micro tax board I can use with the CPU and other parts versus buying a barebones and migrating over.

It so far looks cheaper on price watch to go with barebones and update the CPU same time.

I think that's a given about all hardware but I would think it is about time for an upgrade of hardware

Everyone wants micro taxes... oh micro-ATX, shucks... (sorry couldn't help myself). Most Socket AM3 boards (which are still available here and there) should be compatible with your CPU

I checked price watch. There are still a bunch of AM3 boards out.

Boat load of asrock variations.

It's been 5 yrs since I built my own. Are these as rocks any good?

I just want a better board ( which should be easy to do) with more control and not have to buy power supply and memory yet.

I need several USB and several Sata but I have seperate video card I will use so inboard is unimportant. It will be off.

ASRock motherboards are reported to be good quality boards (I've not used one personally but they are popular). They seem to represent a good value for features offered. I know of no reasons not to purchase one if it has the features you want.

I've used asrock in the past .

I'm going to make a list and then research to see which had favorable reviews.

Not sure if I can get any money for my phenom 910 and 8 gigs of memory so if I can get mono for $50 and not need anything else I'd be happy.

I mean the board in it is very basi. Has data and USB but the machine feels slow.

Slow like a single core CPU and I have 8 gigs

Trying to squeeze another year out of it

I got a gigabyte board but now I may want a 970 chipped board instead of the 760 chipped board I got coming.

I just don't know if it's worth it for my purposes

I received the 760 board and then while trying to decide what to do I did a windows update and the machine wouldnt boot after that. I put the motherboard in it and then sold the machine..lol..
