Black screen before booting up.

I got my build put together and hooked up. It booted up fine the 1st try, I've got all my drivers and updates installed and all of my parts show up. This was Sunday night, when I turned it on it booted up and took me straight to my desktop no problems. Now when I turn on my PC I get a black screen that says "press any button to boot, if nothing is pressed within 5 seconds it will boot from the first drive in order", or something along those lines. And then it takes me to my desktop.

My question is, why is it doing this? Why doesn't it just take me straight to my desktop? I know pressing F2 takes me to my BIOS but I'm not pressing anything, just turning it on.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

No nothing is else is connected to it.

I think the order is optical drive, SSD which is what OS is installed on so I guess this is my primary? and then my HDD.

Yes all of my drives show up and they all show the correct size.

SSD is C Drive and it does show correct size.

This is the message I get.

"Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I've got an Asus mobo and in the BIOS you can drag and drop the order of your drives. Should the SSD be the first, then my HDD and then my optical drive?

Also, I read somewhere that you can use a Windows 8 recovery disc to try and fix it. I bought my OS on Newegg and only got one disc. Is the the same disc I would use for recovery?

Your boot order is correct (or at least it shouldn't cause issues). You could try SSD then optical then HDD. Speaking of HDD, is there an OS loaded on the HDD at all (carry over from previous computer)?

edit: yes, your windows disk is also the recovery disk (it'll be an option when booted with that disk in)

I'm using this mobo - Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0

The drives are plugged into the white headers.

I think there's 4 white and 2 blue headers.

The HDD is empty. It's brand new.

I might have figured it out. I went into BIOS and my drive order was Optical, SSD and HDD.

I swapped it around to SSD, HDD and Optical and saved. I don't think I was saving before when I tried that.

I turned my system off and back on and the Windows logo popped up and took me to my desktop.

So was it trying to boot from the Optical drive instead of the SSD?

It shouldn't have and it has me wondering if there isn't an issue with the optical drive itself - I'm thinking you're going to want to test the optical drive here - if you have issues loading up programs from CD/DVD or playback issues with DVD's in the optical drive (even the computer possibly hanging while the optical drive is in use) then I'd be willing to wager the optical drive is faulty. If you don't have any further issues, then I'm simply confused by this

edit: you didn't leave the install disk in the optical drive did you? That could cause it maybe (no, I'm reaching here)

No there was nothing in the optical drive. I don't know what the deal is.

This probably doesn't have anything to do with it but I was wanted to know, what color sata headers should I be plugged into? White or blue or does it matter?

Well I messed around with it a little last night and since I changed my drive order around and actually saved, it's been working fine. I'll keep and eye on my optical drive in case it ends up being faulty.

So I guess I'm good for now as far as I can tell.

Thanks for your help C12Friendman.
