i have a custom built gaming pc running windows 8 and recently it has been crashing and earlier today it froze before shutting down so i had to hold the power button until the power went off so i rebooted it and ran sfc /scannow and recieved this message windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. i also have a zipped copy of the log if that is of any help.

Sounds to me like the hard drive may be starting to fail - - bad sectors which are not repairable and these will increase over time.
I suggest you test the drive with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software which loads from a bootable CD. The links are here (except for the Western Digital CD version): http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

For the Western Digital CD version, the link is here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/63494-looking-for-western-digital-data-lifeguard-iso/

You can create a bootable CD from an ISO file with IMGBurn: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/
