Hi,

I have an Intel Core i7 860 processor on an ASUS P7P55D Pro ATX motherboard that is 4 years old. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I'm looking for a new, faster CPU/motherboard combo that will allow me to keep and run my current install of Windows 7 on my current (brand new) hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you are upgrading motherboard then you WILL need to re-install windows because the motherboard will require drivers. If you do not install then there is a high chance that it won't run stable and can crash the OS.
Hope that helps

Thanks,

I'm getting a big variety of replies -- some say most boards will work, some say forget it. Anybody have more specific advice? Should I stick with ASUS? Doesn't Windows provide chipset drivers? Thanks.

The MS Sysprep tool will do what you need http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/286053-system-prep...

Hi Y0GI,

I followed your link and read down to this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-i..., which gives directions for exactly what I want to do -- move my hard drive with its Windows 7 OS and all my other programs to a new mobo and CPU. I think sysprep will work for me because my Windows 7 install is a clean install and was never upgraded. Thanks for the info and wish me luck!

You're quite welcome, Zaffer! Good luck with it and please let us know if it works for you as I have not tried Sysprep personally.
