the 290 is faster, but if you do start looking in this price range, also consider the gtx 780 as it is roughly on par across the board as the 290 and 290x, but in some areas is cheaper, produces less heat, and is quieter (due to less heat meaning less fan rpm needed to cool the card)

My reason for recommending a gtx 780 to you is because i own the asus direct cuii version, and after overclocking, it beats both 290 and 290x in many benchmarks. if you are not an overclocker, the 290 and 290x are still faster

I want bf4 which i get free when the cards i choose and if i over clock the 290 it will beat the 780 so the 290 is better in that part but i am asking for the price shall i get the 290 and i play in 1080p i forgot to say but thanks anyway.

the 290 simply does not overclock well, as the benchmarks i referred to were based on an overclocked tri-x 290x (neither overclock well, just a fault of the cards, and doubtfully of the reviewers because i have 4 trusted reviewers, and non of them can get a decent overclock out of them)

for the price, the 280x is better for 1080p, as it still maxes most games. if you want to move up to the next tier of cards, you compare the 780 to the 290 and 290x. at stock, the amd side wins, after overclocking both sides, the 780 generally comes out on top. based on this information and pricing in your area, i hope this helps you make a decision

thank you for posting but again do you think it is worth me getting one to play in 1080p but keep it in mind that i wont be upgrading for years and i would like to use crossfire in the future thanks

It is such an open ended question it's really not fair to the person you are asking. if you have the money, go for the 290 as it will just plain last longer because it is faster. the 280x can max most games, but not ALL games, and so if you arent upgrading, and still want max settings in games, go for the 290 then

the 290 at stock clocks is considerably faster than a 280x/7970ghz with a very good overclock.

the 290s/780s trade blows when it comes to overclocking with the only exception being the evga classified 780 but only because it has a far superior voltage controller compared to all the other cards on the market

I am usually not biased towards one side or the other, but via my personal results with the asus dcuii 780 and achieving 1256 on the core clock, and +480 on the mem clock, I have yet to see anyone get a 290x to compete with it in specifically unigine, metro last light, crysis, FC3, bioshock infinite, BF4, bf3.

I simply cannot stand up for anyone saying the 290x trades blows with the 780 after overclocking (i'm sure there are specific games,) but my results are compared to 290x tri-x owners and on average 10% performance difference from specifically an overclocked 780direct cuii and a overclocked sapphire tri-x 290x (averaged fps in all the games that have canned benchmarks, as well as the unigine benchmarks, then made averages and this was my result after testing my own card, vs making averages of the numbers people have been getting on thier tri-x cards) I have done my homework on the subject XD
