I have a 12 year old HP Pavilion a350n running Windows XP SP3 and 1 gb ram.

I ran the Windows 7 upgrade assistant and have a few questions.

1. It told me that my graphics card will not support the new Windows Aero User Interface. Do I have to update the card or can I choose to without the new interface?

2. There was a message about visiting HP for instructions on how to get Windows 7 up and running on an HP 061 machine. I followed the link but nothing helpful was there.

Any help would be appreciated. I am also considering going to Puppy Linux.

I am not a big pc user. I browse the internet and use e-mail. That is about it.

Thanks.

This computer only has XP drivers from HP for it.

I don't suggest you install Windows 7 on it, aside from being slow, you will have a hard time finding drivers for the hardware which will make it run even slower than normal.

For about $100-150, maybe even under $100 if you look a bit, you can find a used dual-core system that will support Windows 7 and will be a LOT faster than your system. Check craigslist, and make sure you see the system running with some programs open before you buy it.

I bought a very small Lenovo dual-core system with a pretty decent 2.4 gig Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 160 gig drive, 2 gig of RAM for $45 as an example.

hi you can get an add on GPU (graphics card) but your power suppleu might not support a more powerful GPU so i don't see the point with your PC as its very bad if i may say so i would just buy a new one or a laptop for £300. Without the Aero interface it will look very boring and i would just stick to XP
hope this helped!

yep,you need to up the ram preferably to 4gb.as for graphics if you want things to look pretty you will need a dedicated graphics card. this will be a little harder for you as its the older style agp card.you will get reasonable performance but at this age its hard to justify spending the money on it.that is,however, ultimately your choice.

Stick with XP as mentioned already if web browsing and email is all you want to do. XP is still supported by most virus scanners and you can still install current web browsers such as Firefox and Chrome. Only Internet Explorer is not kept up to date. So just delete all shortcuts for it and set it to the highest security settings should someone attempt to use it. If all you do is Email and Internet uninstall apps you do not require to avoid bloatware slowing down the system.

HP vigorously tattooed their motherboards in that era and trying to install anything other than the OS that shipped with it can be a pointless headache.
