one of my 4GB sticks of ram has stopped working so i have decided to buy an 8GB kit in a month or so but will 4GB be enough for now?

Solution
4GB is less then ideal but in your case I think you can get by until you can upgrade to the 8GB kit. The performance will not be as good of course and you may have to turn down some settings. But just remember there are people out there gaming in 32bit machines and they are limited to less the 4GB.

For only a month or so, you're fine, when you get the 8GB set, it'll be like a new rig, with twice as much and dual channel offering up to a 10-15% performance increase, (plus, you might possibly be able to add your existing 4GB and be even better, if you you decide to try and have any problems give me a shout

adding the 4gb to an 8gb dual channel kit would bring it back to single channel. leaving it at 8gb would be better.

Depends on the CPU/mobo, which isn't listed (or I missed it, which is quite possible ;) ) if a newer Intel and it utilizes flex mode, then 8GB would operate in dual channel and the odd 4GB sticks would operate in single channel, also depending on what is being done 12GB in single can outperform 8 in dual
