The heatsink I bought is too large for the case

Solution
1 cm and it wont fit? I would bang the case panel out with a hammer if its sheet metal, (don't try that with plastic lol)

I don't need water cooling. Just a regular heatsink. In fact I would have been fine with a stock heatsink except the CPU I bought didn't come with one. Any other solutions? Would I be better of getting a wider case?

I would also just get an all in one liquid cooler. It'll fit in smaller cases and give you better performance than most if not all of the regular heatsinks you could put in there. Also, with an all in one you wouldn't have to worry about refilling it or anything like you do with full water cooling loops, if that's what you're worried about.

Something like this will give you better than stock cooling, and fit in your case, but I would still spend the extra for the water cooler, especially if you can return the one you bought.

im jumping on the water cooling bandwagon here. they are perfect for smaller cases. Kraken X40, corsair H80I are some good options for an X79 chip in a small case. the 212 evo is also a good choice if you want to stay with air cooling. hope this helps :)
