How long will a manufacturer make a video card?

Hi,

There's SLI and Crossfire now. Let's say I build a new system with the intention to do crossfire. I buy an AMD Video card first and wait a few years to buy another of the same one, when the price comes down. How long will the manufacturer make the same video card? 1, 2, 3 years or more?

Manufacturers only make a specific number of graphic cards for a year or less. Generally, they think how many will sell until the next series of cards will be manufactured and create that many cards. How many of that card that will be available two to three years down the line depends solely on supply and demand. If demand is low enough for that card, you could reasonably expect a new version of that card to still be around in two to three years and of course, there's always E-Bay for used cards.

But here's the thing you need to remember, around three years down the line, two generations of graphic cards have been released. For a little bit more than the cost of a new three year old graphics card, you can probably get a new single card...

But here's the thing you need to remember, around three years down the line, two generations of graphic cards have been released. For a little bit more than the cost of a new three year old graphics card, you can probably get a new single card solution that will perform better and use less energy than your SLI/Crossfire set up.

For these reasons, I always recommend: If you're expecting to go with a multi-graphic card system, do it immediately. If you can't afford it now, wait until you can.
