my computers power supply recently failed, so i purchaced a new one of amazon. after installing it my computer will boot up but only to the screen with the microsoft logo on it then it just does nothing. i have tryed repaceing the new psu with a spair i had, but this makes no difference.

any advice on what might be happening and how to fix it?

the original was a 600w alpine generic cheep one, and the latist one is a 500w corsair modular type. i did have my system running on the back up, which is a 10 year old 450w somthig or other.

my sytem is:
amd fx 8core bulldozer
ati 5670 graphics card
8gig kingston ram
asrock 880g mobo
2 hdd

you guys are usualy wonderfull when it comes to this stuff and any advice is welcome

hi if your power supply was broken and it fried your PC it wouldn't boot as no power will get to the PC hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, but it turns out I have not fried my rig.

I have partially resolved my issue, clearing the cmos has given me back "bootability" on one hard drive. i have two drives in my system one is my boot drive, the other is my data drive. my data drive also have windows 7 on as a backup (for just such an occasion as now) and i can boot using it, however the other still does not boot. I can see and access my boot drive when i boot with my data drive, so i know that they are both ok, but i want to boot from the other drive, as that is where all my games and other software are installed.

Other than formatting and reinstalling windows, any advice on booting from this drive? I should mention that start up repair wont run because it says it can't find it, fixing this could be a solution that i am investigating

this could be a problem with the hard drive but boot into your other drive and copy all the files over to that one so you have a back up of all your games and also if you do a clean install use ninite! also do you still have your Windows CD??

The CX500 is not a good power supply , it's cheap with poor capacitors.
