I upgraded Windows XP to Windows 7 using Windows 7 upgrade DVDs. i upgraded to Windows 8 via a download. Everything works fine but I want to move the OS to SSD. I've read that it is better to install the OS freshly on the SSD versus cloning it.

Will I need to install XP, then upgrade using the W7 DVD, then upgrade again using the W8 download? Or is there some shortcut I could use to avoid installing XP and W7? I'd really rather not have to install the two other OSs I have no need for.

Thanks

Just clone the current version (Windows 8) and restore it on SSD. If it works you'll be saved a lot of pain otherwise you already know the hard way. I hope that clone would do it without giving you any problem. Try it. There is nothing to loose in cloning :)

CLONING ISSUE:
You need to first check if you have AHCI or IDE selected for your SATA controller. If it's IDE then you have to do the proper workaround, then change to AHCI in the BIOS before doing the clone.

Free Cloning software:
This is the best I've found. It didn't work the first try. It has a VERIFY feature though which is nice:

XP->W7->W8:
I'm not quite sure how that works. You might be able to run the W8 install disc, then just use the XP key when prompted. I assume you burned the download Image to DVD?

Cloning or the last method both have Pros and Cons. First the IDE/AHCI issue. If you have AHCI in the BIOS, and no known issues with your Windows setup I suggest trying the CLONE method.

I'm concerned about cloning based on this comment from RetiredChief.
