Even though my computer is always connected to the Internet via a landline and wireless connection and the Internet and e-mail system works perfectly, when i try to, for example, connect to the iTunes store I get the message that my computer is not connected to the Internet, yet when I go into the control panel the computer correctly shows the Internet server I am using. Can you offer any advice, please?

When you changed your ISPs, did you also update the DNS info in your router and systems (assuming you had them manually set with the original ISP)?

Sorry, you've lost me already as I am not really sure what you're talking about. I configured the new Internet server, deleted the old one and did the same with the Windows Live Mail email software, but nothing else.

When you changed ISPs, did you change your router, or keep your original one?

It really sounds like your computer still has some old (first ISP) network settings on it. Verify that you changed the DNS entries (if manually entered) in your IP settings. For most users, using DHCP and automatic settings for DNS (get from the router) is the way to go.

If that fails to solve the issue, force the DNS to use one like Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
