So my laptop stopped working so iput the hard drive in my desktop and upon startup it asked for me to scan the new drive, so I let it.

Now, this scan has been going on for about 14 hours (there are a LOT of unreadable file record segments).

I know I will have to replace the hard drive in my laptop, but how many file record segments are their? I'm on 385xxx, and was wondering how much there would be left cause I don't really want to just power it off. The hard drive it is scanning is 500gb (my uneducated guess would be about 500,000 segments).

Anyways, any information would help.

Thank you!

The number of file record segments in total depends on the number of files that are on that partition, which in turn determines how many file record segments are in the MFT (Master File Table).

If you're scanning it in Windows, open task manager and kill the related process.
If scanning outside Windows, it won't harm Windows or your PC anyway if you just power off (hold power button in till it turns off - usually happens in about 5 seconds).
