Will a HD7700 work on a 350w psu and is it rly worth it?!

I've been wanting to upgrade my old geforce on my Dell Studio 540 on a £100 budget without having to change the psu as I'm not tech savvy! Thanks a lot to a previous thread and brilliant help from you guys I've pretty much 90% decided on a HD7750 (uses low power consumption and doesnt even need power conenction outside of pci-e) :)

But...before i buy i just wanted to ask if it's possible with my 350w psu and system to get a HD770 instead?! Its very tempting as the price is only slightly dearer and i'm aware its a better card. Even though it states a 4-500w psu needed i've seen a few old thread comments here were it seems quite possible to run it on a much lower psu. Is it worth me going for it or best to stick with the HD7750?! i just want to rule the option out before i buy the 7750.

My system spec:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66 GHz 2.67 GHz
4 GB Ram
1TB HDD
NVIDIA Geforce 9800 512MB GDDR3 (PCI-E slot)

Forgot to add - the demands won't be too great as I'm only going to be playing SWTOR and possibly WOW at preferably 1920 res on hopefully good to high detail settings - I wont be playing any other games on it :)

An HD 7750 will work fine considering your PSU can handle that power hungry 9800gt, however the 7750 is a minimal upgrade performance wise compared to the 9800gt while the 7750 makes up with modern features like dx11 and lower power consumption. I'd say upgrading to a 7750 is not worth it, but I can suggest the 7770 or the r7 250 to truly upgrade your gpu performance.

edit: saw your second post, I guess the 7750 is enough for your needs, but do keep in mind that it is not a large boost compared to your 9800gt.

Thanks for the reply :)

Ah so you think the R7250 is a better choice? I thought about that myself originally, but i hadn't realised it was a better card than the HD7750 or indeed that the 7750 would be such a minimal upgrade from my old 9800GT

I posted an earlier thread on the topic and the general responses seem to be: R7 250 < GTX650 <= HD7750! I checked the performance stats on some sites and it seems R7250 and HD7750 are about the same, but you think the R7250 is much more powerful?

I must admit I am tempted by the HD7770 as it makes sense knowing that it will be a much bigger upgrade from my old card. The only thing stopping me from the 7770 is that i think it needs a separate cable for power that requires a 6-pin connector for this, but i believe you can get some sort of adaptor? Can you tell from my pc and photos if this would be the case for me?
The other more important thing is the power supply. Do you think it'll run ok on my 350w?! (On a side note, i also notice it's a longer card and i'm hoping it'll physically fit in my case next to that blue cable you can see in the pictue near my old GT card!)

If you can answer this for me and it turns out getting the 7770 is perfectly possible, that'll be great thanks!

Thanks again :)

Whoops. I meant an r7 250x I forgot to put an x my mistake :). the 7770 uses 1 6pin connector so that won't be a problem since in your photos I can confirm that you have one ,you're actually using it to power your 9800gt. and the 9800gt is a more power hungry card than the 7770. if your psu can handle the 9800gt It can easily handle the 7770, but I still suggest upgrading your PSU asap to prevent damage to your components if it fails mostly due to age.

Thanks so much for the fast response :)
Ah yes, now it makes sense what u meant- the R7250X! Wow i hadn't realised my old card was so power hungry and even more than the 7770!? That's good news i have the 6-pin connector too - im guessing its the black and yellow cable on the right of my old card!?

So it looks like the 7770 is definitely the card of choice if it's easier to run than my old and that as far as the psu and my pc is concerned it shouldn't notice any difference taxing wise if it can run the old?! But you recommend upgrading the psu, even if i just kept original card, simply due to its age? Sounds logical. Will i be ok installing the new 7770 for now and upgrade the psu later, with the 7770 posing no more if not less of a threat than the original card? Or is it quite a high risk it will fail anytime soon!?

Thanks again :)

You can still use your current psu to run the 7770 but do avoid overclocking, I don't see the psu failing just yet. the 7770 theoretically draws 80 watts max while the 9800 gt draws a whopping 105 watts. but keep my advice and upgrade your psu if ever you have the budget to buy one :)

That sounds promising!

Going to order this XFX 7770 from Scan as it seems good price and make:-

I hope it fit's into the case and board area! ;-)

Thanks again for the advice, will let you know the outcome :)
