Hi Guys,
I have a barebones Dell precision 490 and want to add a high end graphics card. Dell's spec states a max of 150w. What options do I have, please? If I was to add a 500w GPU PSI-E card would I need to upgrade the PSU and is so, to what rating? The unit has 8Gb Ram and will have an 250Gb SSD and 500Gb HDD.

TIA

could you explain that a bit (the 150 watts) i am looking through the dell site and don't see any reference to that yet.

if it means what i think it does - there is an available 6 pin power connection so you might be able to get a R9 270x or GTX 660 w/o any problems.

but i do think you're saying TOTAL power is 150? no?

Hi. thanks for the feedback. The 150w comes from Dell's spec re graphics:
The graphics section of the spec:Support for PCI Express x16 graphics cards up to 150 watts and with up to 512MB graphics memory including: NVIDIA Quadro® FX 4500; NVIDIA
Quadro® FX 3500; ATI FireGL 7200; NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3450; NVIDIA Quadro® FX550; ATI™ FireGL™ V3400; NVIDIA Quadro® NVS 285; All graphics cards support dual monitor configurations

Like you I don't understand the 150w restriction seeing that the power supply is 750w which also has one 6pin connector (no 8pin available).

Do you think this power supply will support the R9 270x or do I need to upgrade it? I notice from Sappire's site it only draws 75w from the 6pin connector so, if Dell are referring to that re 150w then this shouldn't be a problem. I'm a novice at build specs so please correct me of that assumption is wrong!

Many thanks
