I have a problem with my dell inspiron 570 PC, I got the pc from an old business we used to run, it was put in by an external company for use with CCTV, and was connected up to state of the art cameras, this was its only use

the company went under and I decided to take the PC home instead of throwing it out as it was a pretty decent machine

I have lived in 2 different houses and seem to have the same problem in both, when i plug in the modem it just doesnt read it at all, it doesnt even seem to notice its even plugged in

the modem works fine on other computers and my laptop picks up wifi from it, but this PC just doesnt seem to recognise it at all

im really stuck with this, do you think it could be a block thats been put on by the cctv company that installed the computer to my old business? or could it be something alot more simple?

Ive tried it with different modems and it seems to be the pc itself

any help would be greatly appreciated

Solution
ok assuming windows 7 here click on the icon and then click open network and sharing center, click on change adaptor settings on the right side of screen, right click on the device and select propertys, go down to internet protocol 4 and click it. make sure on the general tab that both items are set to obtain automatically (the ip address and DNS) if they are already set correctly then close all of it. go back down to the icon on the task bar and try running network troubleshooter(it will try to find and fix some common issues automatically on its own)
they could have disabled stuff they didn't think would be needed in the bios settings. best way to know if they did this would be to enter bios by pushing the key to enter bios (usually listed at bottom of screen, usually f2, f10 or delete key) once in bios go over to the last tab and it should have options to save settings and exit. there is usually an option that says restore default settings. selected it to restore default settings then select save settings and exit. reboot computer and see if it shows up after that.

sorry if you knew how to do this already but I steped it out incase you didn't know

thanks fvor that, I just gave it a try and unfortunately it still doesnt seem to be working

I have noticed when I disconnect the modem, the little network icon in the bottom right tray has a red cross, when i connect it it looks like its loading, then when the modem has loaded, it has the yellow sign with the exclamation mark, when i hover over it it says "unidentified network, no internet access"
