Installing windows 8.1 on 128gb ssd but want my 1tb drive

Solution

Is this the best way to do it? I tried to use the robocopy/mklink method and I kept getting errors while trying to log back into the computer and had to reinstall windows (which seemed like the simplest solution).

That's the right idea. That's what I have. After you've installed your OS on you ssd, simply attach your 1TB HDD and you should be able to use it as a data disk for files, media or whatever you want after reformatting it. If that has OS on it to, you may want to try to migrate or clone your data first to protect it so that you can transfer it back on.
For ex, transfer all your important data to an external drive. Install your OS SSD, connect your 1TB HDD and reformat it as the "D", "E" or whatever letter you want it assigned to other than "C" which is now reserved for your SSD. Then once your system is up and running, transfer all the data from your external drive onto your 1TB HDD.
There may be easier methods than this but it has worked for me. Hope this helps! Anyone with an easier method please chime in!

My goal was to have my documents folder on the second drive. But with the restrictions of 8.1 I haven't seen anyone suggesting a way to accomplish that. Both drives are new and have nothing on it.
