I have a mini mother board atm, and i know it's having problems. My main focus though is upgrading the motherboard and upgrading to a 4th gen intel CPU. Was wondering what your thoughts are on a capable but not extremely expensive Mother board is. One that would work with my 7970 and the new CPU. Don't have the money, nor would i want to upgrade my GPU anyway but i figured if i had money left over from my tax return i should jump on upgrading.

currently have an 2nd gen i5 2400. Asus mini board

well if i get the i7 cpu id say close to 200 or 200, nothing more than that. Since after i buy / pay off stuff that leaves me with about 500 for CPU and mobo.

anyways here is link for a good mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131989 ------ for $199.99 @ Newegg

You didn't mention about any RAM modules that you are currently using
Asus Maximus VI Hero
Asus Z87-PRO
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC
check the compatibility with these... your 7970 will support them, only thing remains is the RAM modules..

I guess MAXIMUS VI HERO is good for back generation RAMs.
Let me know if there's anything else.

& for your new i7
