I am wondering how important the new Instructions are going to be and how soon. If I buy and i5 with out the new instructions and without access to more than 4 cores will it become unsupported in 5 yrs or so. I am hoping to buy a computer that will last a long time (10yrs+). I don't game as of yet and unless i suddenly got a lot of free time probably won't. But I do like to stream netflix / hulu plus while having multiple emails running and maybe 8 - 10+ other surf windows open while researching stuff. Also maybe running Win Office 2010 at the same time. I'm just wondering if the i5-3470 will get left in the dust in 5-6 yrs because of new instructions. I've been trying to google and bing for this information with out any real luck. But I found this website and a thread about these two computers.

Solution
I wouldn't consider the i5-3470 since it's already a generation old. I would make the comparison between the FX-8320 and the i5-4670 or i5-4570 since those are the current Haswell chips. The i5-4670 is certainly the chip to get out of the three. Intel chips are considerably faster per cycle than the AMD chips at the moment so you can't compare them on MHz alone. If you're trying to make a computer that lasts as long as possible I would go with a current generation i5 chip.
Core for core the i5 is faster. Overall the 8320 is faster and a better multi tasker, which it sounds like is what you mostly want. Plus the 8320 is easily overclocked making it more future proof. In 5-6 years both CPUs will be obsolete, but usable depending on your demands. There's still 10 year old single cores out there serving their owners just fine.

I'd go with the 8320.

Thank you for your input. The FX-8320 is abt $200 more than i5, I was thinking because the AMD had the newer instructions and 8 core capabilities it would not get left behind so fast. But it sounds like it will anyway. If I'm going to need to buy another computer in 5-6 yrs seems I should buy the least expensive now. Will computers with out the new codes suddenly stop being able to handle regular tasks as surfing, email and streaming? Thanks for the help!

I understand where you are going with your logic and thanks for your help and input on this. The AMD is already $200 more than the i5-3470. Just looked up the i5-4570 / 4670 and they are about $250 more and only come w/ 4GB Ram. So I will immediately have to get 8-12 more Ram ($100) min I would think. for it to function well for a while. At this point I'm almost doubling my investment and thinking I should do the buy a new cheap computer every 5-6 years. This is what I am wondering, just how important is this new Tech. going to be in 5 yrs. and will the non-haswell systems suddenly be almost useless because of it?? Or will it only be HI-end Apps and games that will REQUIRE it?? Thanks for your help!

I re-checked my prices and I was wrong, for i5-4670 almost the same price, maybe $50 more plus extra Ram. Thanks for the recommendation. I think that is what I am going to get. If that's not future proof, I give up. :)

Is it a big deal if I get, Lenovo or Asus or HP ?? Any Diff.
Buying from either New egg or Tiger Direct.
Thanks

AVX and everything that goes along with Haswell.
