Picture extends over edge of screen despite correct resolution

I just built my first pc. I have always been using the same monitor so i had the resolution set to 1680x1050 because that's the only resolution that worked and i didnt know what the monitors actual resolution was. When i decided to use a different monitor that i knew was 1080p, i thought id have to re-adjust my resolution but when i did, the picture extended over the edge of the screen. I played around with settings and i cant seem to get a normal picture with the resolution set to 1080p on a monitor that i know IS 1080p. i have the latest video drivers and dont know what the problem is.
Please help. thanx :)

all hdmi cables look the same .the version defines the ability of producing 120hz 1.4 or above . the version may be written on the cable or elso you must check the cables package to see if refers to the cables version.

im using nvidea and im guessing you mean i turn on scaling on the nvidea control panel? i did that and same thing happened

well is it a monitor or tv? try a different scaling mode. i suppose there are two options aspect ratio and full screen mode.also do you know the panels native hz?is it 60 or 75?sometimes some panels work on 59hz. also there are known issues on windows 8(if you are using). untimately if you want only picture i would suggest a dvi-d if possible.

Its probably just temporary but it makes me wonder if my other display is only 1050p. I am using a 55" Samsung smart TV. So no dvi :/ I tried different scaling methods. Neither worked. Since its a 3D TV, I'm gonna assume that its native rate it 120Hz but it goes to 59 hz by default for some reason. And last but not least I'm using windows 7 home premium.
