Q: Will I see any real-life performance improvement from a 2TB RAID 0 NAS set up for my video streaming vs. just setting it up as two separate 1TB volumes (1 with my media and 1 with my backup docs & photos)?
Background: I just bought a 2-bay ReadyNAS with 2 1TB WD Red drives. I've already got it set up as a RAID 0 volume but I'm debating (myself) on whether or not the performance improvement is worth the increased risk. I have offsite backup so losing data isn't a real concern, but more the hassle of reloading all of the data back onto the drives if one fails and has to be replaced. Note: the write speed of the ReadyNAS 102 is very slow (several hours for every 50GB).
My primary use is 1) Media Streaming (mostly 1GB videos and occasionally some music) and 2) backup storage for documents and photos (i.e., limited access required). I want to make sure the NAS has no problem keeping up with the video streaming. I wouldn't think it would be a problem (especially since 99% of the time it will be just 1 stream), but just wanted to make sure.
