OK.. so here is the scenario:

Downstairs:
ADSL2 modem connected to Wireless Router
Wireless router connected to Switch
Devices all plug into switch
Laptops use WiFi

Simple enough so far.

What i would like to do is..
Move my LAN printer (no WiFi) upstairs wirelessly

So im thinking scenario would then be:

Downstairs:
ADSL2 modem connected to Wireless Router
Wireless router connected to Switch
Devices all plug into switch
Laptops use WiFi

Upstairs:
Wireless router (turned into an AP)
Printer connected to router

Q1 - is this possible?
Q2 - Is it simply a case of turning the 2nd router into an AP and this would work?

Solution
That's basically what I'm asking you to do.

You shouldn't need to flash a custom firmware on it; the support is a little more common now than it was a year ago.

Do you have a router in mind? If not, I know the TP-Link TL-WR702N can do it and is stupidly cheap.

100%, its a rented place so no drilling of holes etc sadly.

Its only to run the printer upstairs so doesn't need to be a great connection.. would this have any effect on the rest of my devices?

It's absolutely doable. Just make sure your router downstair has WDS function and buy another wireless router that has WDS function. UTT's router can make your scenario come true easily!
