When I change my router's password to a 16 or larger phrase, confirm my newpassword and log out. After that when new password is entered I keep getting "password incorrect" notification. What am i doing wrong? Is this a sign of a hacker pulling my leg?

Solution
It may be your laptop (or whatever device you're trying to connect) that's not compatible with that length of password, or not compatible with the encryption type you've set in the router's wireless settings. Applies particularly to older laptops and other wireless-enabled devices.

Try setting a shorter wireless password in your router setup or change the encryption type.

If using WPA2 encryption, try a 12 character password (that's plenty strong enough to secure your network. All my Netgear routers in my various offices come with a preset 12 character passphrase and all my devices can connect fine. I never alter the preset passphrase, there's no need. Every Netgear router has it's own unique preset passphrase so that's good enough...

Thanks for the response Phillip. Just in case..just to be sure...I was talking about the administrator password of the router. I got no problems with the WIFI or guest passwords. Does it matter?

The problem is that the router truncates the password you enter without notifying you. I am unsure of the truncation point on your router (it seems to be 15 based on your initial post; mine is 12), but enter the you password up to the truncation point (that would be the first 15 characters of your password if you truncation point is 15).
