There is 2 type you have to work with in RAM slots:

* 1 & 3: and that called Triple Channel motherboards, you can use 1 ram stick 3 or 6 for matching mobo bios firmware, if you use 2 or 4 the bios will switch the processes to duel or quad channel in every processes will increasing your CAS latency and some mobos don't have the switcher it will give you error peep.
* 2 & 4: Duel Channel mobo, you can use 2, 4 or 8 ram sticks, not 1, 3, 6 or 9 ^^

Check if the memory is compatible with your motherboard. If it compatible then you can install it. Yes, more memory is always better so instead of throwing the memory away, why not use it and get the best out of it??

The memory will run in single channel mode the difference isn't huge so IMO install it.

You have 2 RAM and your friend give you one, buy other one so you will have 4 sticks.. but, must be same Size, Speed and Voltage as that in your system and make sure the one you have from your friend also the same.

Ok I put the 3rd ram stick in and everything is good so far. Cpu-z says i have 6gb of ram and that it still runs in dual channel(why?) . All 3 sticks are 2gb each and 1333mhz each, how ever only two are same brand. Can you tell me some examples of problems that I might experience because of the extra stick so if they happen I will know that the extra stick is the problem. And sorry for this noobish question but is this in any way dangerous for my mobo/cpu?( the different voltages for example). Thanks to all who anwsered so far

Edit: qewee many thanks for your help, i know that ram is very cheap nowadays especially ddr3 but I really cant buy another stick in the near future so I would rather pull the 3rd stick out then buy a fourth one if you think that will be better.

Look mate.. there is no problem will cause.. but here is what happened in your PC right now

Before: BIOS split slots 2&4.. ONE IN and ONE OUT (total 2 sticks) - dual channel
Now: 2&4.. 2 IN and ONE out (total 3 sticks) - single channel
It's slow one side process now
