O.K. I get that if you pirate software that's wrong. No problem. However I bought a used laptop that has a windows 7 sticker on the front that gives me this message. The sticker with the product key has worn off the bottom of the laptop so I cannot use that number. Micro$oft now wants me to buy ANOTHER copy of the software I've (or the manufacturer) already bought. If stealing software is piracy what is this called, besides greed?

If you don't have a key (worn off the bottom), what are they supposed to say?

You can try MagicalJellyBean to possibly find the key.
But with a used laptop, you have no idea what the previous owner installed on it. It may very well be a pirated copy, and not the original.

And in any case, there is no possible way I would use software on a used PC. You have zero idea what is on there, either on purpose or accidentally.
Completely blow away the drive, and install everything fresh.

Contact the manufacturer of the laptop -- they will have a record of what OEM system was installed on the system when it was sold and also have a serial and model # installed on the laptop which shows you are indeed a legitimate license holder of an OEM version of windows and as such they are responsible for support (ie. they will provide you a new product key if the old key is no longer readable ) Microsoft sells them the licenses at a discount and as part of that sale they agree to provide end user support for this type of problem rather than MS.

If for some reason they will not provide you a new key after you contact them and give what information you have (ie. Model #, Serial #, make of computer, etc.) then contact MS and explain to them that you have contacted the OEM and they refuse to help and sometimes MS will provide a new number after getting the info from you ( usually they will want the make an model of the system and any readable portion of the sticker to verify that it was a legitimate purchased OS ) but they are normally fairly helpful if you explain the situation and that you have already tried resolving it through the OEM.
