Hi, all I am having a rather frustrating issue as a very new computer builder.

I built my first gaming pc about a month ago and I recently added a new solid state boot drive. I did a clean install of windows 8.1 from a usb with my old 1tb hdd unplugged. One day I left my computer on to download a game to my hdd while I was away at work and when I came back the computer was in sleep mode, which it should have been ( I set the computer to go to sleep around the time the game was supposed to finish). When I woke up my pc, a restart loop started saying that is was performing updates before shutting down, after a few restarts (4 or 5) the computer booted to the desktop normally and I had to leave it alone. I didn't receive any error messages or notifications about a problem. After leaving the computer idle for about an hour the computer restarted again. Sadly i did not see this happen, I came back to find my computer asleep with the log in screen up. I have not updated the bios or turned on TRIM (I'm not sure if it was set to on or off by default either).

PS. I also added a new wd black storage drive, but it doesn't have the OS on so I don't think that is the thing causing me problems.

PC Specs:

Motherboard: Asus M5 A97 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-6300
Video: Asus GTX-660 Direct CU2 OC edition
Memory: G. Skill Ripjaw 8 Gb. (2x4 gb)
Storage:
Toshiba Q series pro 128 gb
WD caviar black 1tb
seagate barracuda 1tb (this drive was my only storage drive initially, I kept the OS and data on it so that I could use it for setting up the boot drive and formatting purposes)
PSU: SeaSonic M12I 650w

If there is any more information you need to help me troubleshoot I am happy to oblige.

TRIM is enabled by default on Windows 8.1 for SSDs as it should be. It sounds like your computer is set to automatically restart after installing Windows updates if it isn't being used, which isn't necessarily a bad thing unless you don't want it to do that. You can prevent it by opening "wuapp" in run (windows update), selecting change settings on the left, then changing when updates are installed.

Updating your BIOS can be scary, but as long as you don't lose power or force a power change during the install it should be just fine. If you want to be certain, you can usually check MD5 sums on the download and the one given by some manufacturers on their website to make sure the download completed successfully.

So I think I figured out the problem (maybe, I'm not at home) I believe I should update my bios unless I run a high risk of frying my motherboard (i am pretty unclear about that). Also disabling sleep mode might be a good idea because it is potentially harmful to my ssd. Anyone have other contributions? Things I should check?

Great! I was concerned because of the constant and rapid restarting, but i guess that was really just part of having a quick new ssd. Thank you for your help and insight about updating the bios!
