New system or try to upgrade old system?

This is my first post here.

I am an owner of a Dell 435MT. It's been a decent machine, i7 920, 8 gigs of ram. I am a 3D artist by profession however and this machine is no longer cutting it. I pulled it apart the other day to see what I could do to speed it up, and quickly realized why I will never buy another factory built machine again. Dell has eliminating any possibility of upgrading the components. It's an odd case with a non standard layout. Too small to fit a decent power supply in, which means I can't upgrade the video card. The MB bios is crippled which means I can't overclock the 920. From the research I have done the MB doesn't support an SSD, and it is supposedly rather tricky to find any RAM that will work on that MB in any configuration larger than 8gb.

So I'm stuck with two options. Get a new case and a new MB for the i7 920 and build a new machine around that. However MB's for that CPU are now extinct, though I can find some on ebay, but I hate to put money into dead architecture. Still with a new MB and a new case I could overclock the 920, get some more ram in there, and install an SSD. That could keep me afloat for a few more years for relatively little money.

The other option is to just build a new machine. I would have about a 1,000 budget. I was looking at building an AMD 8350 system, but looking at cinebench scores (relevant since this machine will be for 3d rendering) it only scores a 6.92 at clock speeds, while the i7 920 overclocked to 4 ghz scores a 6.91. I don't normally overclock but that is pretty disappointing anyway.

So anyway what would you guys do? The machine would be for 3d rendering, video editing, and photoshop work.

It's looking awful hard with a $1000 budget for the machine you want. You would probably want an i7 and 16 GB RAM minimum and a decent GPU. If you can go a little more, then:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($309.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($142.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard...
Well depending on which i7 920 it is it will either hit 3.8G without an issue at 1.2 volts or not, it's a crap shoot. It is not a bad processor at all and really shines when you hit 3.8 on it. The problem is with the rest of the stuff coming from Dell. I have never been a fan of their stuff because they use cheap quality parts all through out the system. They run, but they aren't designed for speed imho. You could do an i7 3770k ($249 at Microcenter) system and overclock that. Mine sits at 4.5G and runs at 75C max with hyper-threading on in Seti with both video cards crunching and the CPU.

Thanks. I know for sure that I want a 128gb SSD for my system files. I want at least 16gb of ram, preferably 32gb. After that I don't care too much. Despite working in 3D the video card really doesn't matter much, most 3d software applications don't really utilize the video card as much as you would think, and I am not much of a gamer.

adding an OS (win 7 or 8) would tack on ~ $100 more

Thanks! That looks decent, I think I could get a cheaper GPU though and put that towards some more ram and an SSD. I also don't need a storage HD as I have a 1 TB drive laying around.

I think I finally settled on what I am going to do. I am going with the i7 4770k haswell and the Asus Z87-Pro. I figured that was the cheapest Haswell chip and it will give me a nice upgrade path in the future. I am getting the 128gb Samsung SSD drive and decided to just go with 16gb of ram, I can add more later. I am getting a cheaper video card the EVGA with the GTX 650 and 1gb of ram. Anyway the total cost for all of the components came to about 1050. It will be a HUGE upgrade over my current system and will give me some nice upgrade options in the future.
