Okay, I apologize in advance if this is a really stupid question, but I'm just learning not to take any of these numbers for granted. I would assume if a motherboard supports 4-way SLI it would also, automatically, support 3-way SLI and 2-way SLI. Is that the case?

It occurred to me that maybe a 4-way could only support 4-way and 2-way but not 3. Sorry, I have no idea how these work but I'm tasked with choosing my own parts. The number of X79 3-way boards is limited and I'd like to expand my search field if possible.

No, if it supports 4-way it will support 3. It just needs enough lanes on the PCI-e slots to provide enough bandwidth. Plus pay for NVidia to license it.

Thanks! I have been searching all over for that to no avail. The info givers probably assume I'm sharper with the info than I am. :)

Any recommendations on a board to go with a 4930k for 3-way/3D surround? (I'll be 3D modeling, rendering, gaming, multitasking...)
