That completely depends on what is available at your location, and how much you want to spend.

As USAFRet has said, completely depends on your location, and the ISPs in the area.

For example, I live in the USA on the West Coast, the two major ISPs available for me are AT&T, and Comcast. AT&T has a maximum of 25 Megabits (Not bytes) for around $55/mo (promotion). Whereas Comcast has a maximum of around 100 or 150 Megabits (I forget their highest in my area), but I chose to go with a 50 Mb plan, which is costing me $50/mo with a promotion. So I'm paying less for double the speed of what AT&T would provide.

And another example:
I have 3 choices. Verizon DSL, Verizon FiOS, or Cox Cable. Fiber would be a potential 300Mbps, if I wanted to pay for it. I have 50/25.
People 500 meters away cannot Verizon FiOS, simply because Verizon has not run fiber lines in that neighborhood. DSL or Cox cable.
