I've got a ide hard drive i bought a ide to sata converter to plug it in to my existing motherboard when i hit the power button the computer had power for 1-2 seconds and shut off and could not be turned on again until i completely removed the hard drive?

Is... that a floppy power connector? If so make sure its plugged in, in the right orientation, plug those in upside down and it can easily fry the device.

Also that IDE plug doesn't seem to have the keyed pin so its easy to plug that in upside down aswell. I'd give it another shot.

Yea just did that same thing no power after it was plugged in. The IDE connector was hooked in correctly and the power to the connector was also hooked up properly even tried hooking in different 4 pin dolex from the power supply resulted in no power. Honestly the hard drive is really old it has windows 95 so tech difference from it and my current motherboard quite a gap. I'm looking to get the data off the hard drive and possibly clone it to a new sata hard drive possibly?

Only have my one computer to work with at the moment however I originally approached this by making a build with two different motherboards that both supported ide as the connection and both had the same socket for intel celeron 775 because that was what the original computer had hardware wise so I attempted to replicate in a manner had two different outcomes with the boards. The first board was practically identical to the original but once the board was installed correctly it ended up being defective no power with or without the original hard drive installed. The second motherboard was a Asrock a slightly newer board that had an Ide and two Sata connections and supported the Intel Celeron. When installed without the hard drive plugged in the cpu fan and power supply fans both turned on but with the hard drive plugged in the computer got no power at all.
