Hi, so I've had this Seagate Expansion 1TB HDD for about 2 years now and I think its coming to the end of its life now. The problem is that the drive has thrown up problems before I could finish transferring data off it onto a new hard drive.

I was transferring some TV Shows when suddenly it stopped, the hard drive started beeping and the whole thing just shut down. Now, when I connect it to the computer it appears on "My Computer" but there is no capacity bar or any such information about it.

I know that there is no reader head problem or wire problem as I tried it with a different wire and it still shows the same problem; and I tried to use Recuva to see if I could recover the files that way but obviously Recuva only recovers files that have been deleted, not files that aren't accessible. This way I know that the reader head isn't broken as Recuva is still able to find recently deleted files. Here is the screenshot of the My Computer Screen:

For Reference:
Hard Drive: Seagate Expansion Portable Drive
Model: SRD00F1
OS: Windows 8 (I know, I know, but it came with the laptop)

I really appreciate any help you can give me, and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this so I can get my documents back!

Redo! Backup & Restore. (available @ www.redobackup.org )

->After downloading, "Right Click" on the file and select "Burn image to disk"
OR download and install LiLi ( http://linuxliveusb.com ), Run Lili from the start menu, select your USB device, slect the .ISO file you downloaded and click the lighting bolt to make a bootable USB drive.

->Boot the computer using Redo!

->Close the backup program that launches at startup

->Open the "Start" menu on the lower left corner and run the disk checking tool (testdisk). It may fix the problem. try opening the USB drive from the icon on the desktop after testdisk completes.

->Check to see if you are able to view files on the dive now. if not then file recovery is nessesary. Proceed to next step.

-> Open the "Start" menu on the lower left corner and run the file recovery program (photorec) to recover the data.
