4670k
gigabyte z87 hd3
2x4gb RAM
r9 280x (taken out for testing)
seasonic 660w
1 hdd & ssd

the computer shut off and wouldnt turn back on, so I began testing by disconnecting the psu and turning it on with a paperclip, which worked. I then reconnected the psu and tried to boot again, but of course nothing happens. I tried the paperclip with the psu attached to everything, still no sign of life. I then removed the CPU power cable and the paperclip will now start the PSU.

any idea what's going on here?

I'm wondering if the motherboard is dead maybe?

if the motherboard connector of psu is connected to mobo, cpu fan connected and other peripherals connected but cpu power cable disconnected and you try to power on, what happens?

nothing at all - dead as a doornail

i also tried removing the RAM - still nothing

so to clarify I'm running on just the cpu, mobo, psu and peripherals and it's not booting at all (as if it were unplugged) but the psu will power on alone

So no fault with the CPU, mobo may be at peril.
