Hi guys,
I've got a machine here with a weird problem. The device manager is not automatically installing drivers for usb devices. ie. usb sticks.

Things I have tried include hints from this thread:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/246585-45-windows-auto-installing-drivers
- registry entries seem ok

and
MrFixIt from Microsoft link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-vista/tips-for-solving-problems-with-usb-devices
- detects an issue but not able to resolve

also

a) sfc /scannow - no errors
b) Scanned for viruses and spyware with ComboFix, Kaspersky, MalwareBytes - some minor stuff detected, but nothing fixed.
c) Removed Universal Host Controllers from device manager - when I restart the computer they are detected again and drivers install correctly, but still same problem when I attach a USB device like a usb stick or usb mouse.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated! (and don't tell me to reinstall a fresh copy of windows, trying to avoid that)

Solution
All was looking good until I got to step 2 in the gpedit section., there is no category called "Device Installation" under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System.

This could be why. Any ideas on how to get it back?

btw.. this machine is Win7 Home edition, so I manually installed gpedit.msc

"Everyone,

I fixed the issue myself. I found a link which helped me a lot in troubleshooting. It seems that Windows somehow loses USBSTOR.xxx files from the C:\Windows\INF folder. These are needed for Windows to detest USB Storage devices properly. You can simply copy them from (C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3) to C:\Windows\INF and it all seems to work great.

Link to the site where I got the help from:

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html

I used the heading: Vista asks for drivers or just want to install new hardware

Once you have copied the files, reattached your USB device and it should find it. If it does not, delete it from the Device Manager, remove the device and re-plug it in. It should find it properly this time.

I hope this helps others."

Thanks for the tip Max.. unfortunately this did not fix the problem. It did correctly read the name of the USB device though, that was the only change.

Windows recognises the device as Sandisk Cruzer USB Device, but is unable to find a driver for it. It's not a Sandisk issue, I've tried other generic USB sticks as well.
