Lack of USB3.0 support should not be the issue here.
Did you try installing the drives encryption/password protection?
Does the drive show in My Computer?
Does the drive show in disk management (right click my computer -> manage -> disk management)
does the drive need to be initialized?
Does the drive need a drive letter?
Does the drive have a partition?
