I bought Windows 8.1 through Newegg and the key it has doesnt work. At first when I was installing it wouldnt work then I used a generic key as a walkaround to that problem so that I have the ability to use windows 8.1
But I need to get it activated, and the key that came with the installation disk doesnt work. It says that key doesnt work.
Why is this happening? How do I fix it?

P.S. I did not upgrade from 8 to 8.1.
I bought the 8.1 standard edition

if the key was rejected when you first entered it in, it will most likely be a issue of mis reading the key. for example here are some common errors
0,O
1,l
2,Z
2,7
5,S
m, rn
8, B
6,G

it always takes me a few tries or I give up and read the numbers with a magnifying glass
Okay, I'm a little confused...

Don't you input the key BEFORE finishing the Windows 8 installation?

I believe that's what I did, then clicked "Activation" and it was automatic.

So apparently it won't Activate but then you said you put in the WRONG KEY anyway so that's probably the problem (though I don't understand why the wrong key would even work).

*I suggest you phone Microsoft Support with this issue. They should be able to easily help you out. Tell them exactly what happened (put in wrong key because real one didn't work; won't activate now..).

Sound as though there is a mismatch between the Version type and the Key. Probably best to return to Newegg and describe your experience with a view to a replacement...It may be possible to modify the ie.cfg file in Sources to enable a choice of versions, this was possible with W7 and Vista, but W8 is different...
