Is it possible for current cards to be hdmi compatible via a firmware or driver update? I have the amd 290 sapphire tri-x and am planning on another for a 4k TN monitor. Will display port be my only option or could firmware updates be coming once hdmi 3.0 becomes more popular, relatively speaking.

No, there won't be firmware updates. It's a hardware issue. Also, it's HDMI version 2.0.

Also, most 4K monitors either have issues or are simply way too expensive. I suggest getting a quality 2560x1440 IPS monitor instead.

Gaming at 4K vs 1440p gives about HALF the frame rate but the quality is basically IDENTICAL. Heck, most games look the same to me at 1920x1080 as they do at 2560x1440 (though top-down games like Diablo 3, SC2, Torchlight etc look way better due to the SMALL HUD/TEXT). Skyrim, Borderlands 2, and many others look identical to me aside from a very minor increase in sharpness to HUD text.

You also aren't going to get 60FPS at full quality on a 4K monitor for most modern games anyway even with a better Crossfire/SLI...
