Currently my mobo is the Asus Maximus V Formula and I am only planning to use headset, not speakers. Also 7.1 audio is preferred.

I am currently eyeballing the Asus Xonar Phoebus and the Essence STX which has a very little price margin in between those two, with the Phoebus being slightly more expensive

More about : soundcard

your onbard can do the job and for gaming is more than fine and with 7.1. the dedicated cards are in a defferent level of fidelity especially the ones you refer to. and you will have further abilities on recording and using special audio software or if seeking flawless audio playback, which also requires high end speakers or headsets to match with such hardware

A sound card is never a good solution IMO. The onboard audio on the ROG boards is already pretty good.
