i have read about DirectX 11.2 'tiled resources' feature...
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2013/06/28/directx-11-2/

"Designed to allow a game to use both system RAM and graphics RAM to store textures, Leblond claimed that tiled resources will enable DirectX 11.2 games to vastly improve the resolution of textures displayed in-game. By way of proof, Leblond showed off a demonstration that used a claimed 9GB of texture data - the majority of which was held in system RAM, rather than graphics RAM."

does it means that future games need 8GB or more ram for gaming pc?

"While we won't bore you with all of the technical details, the idea behind tiled resources is pretty simple. Basically, a bit of code instructs your gaming console to render more detail in areas that your character is focusing on, while shedding detail in areas of the game that you can't immediately see. If it helps you to imagine things, think about how your eye works. You can see very clearly directly in front of you, but things in your peripheral vision are blurred and slightly unrecognizable, at least until you avert your gaze and suddenly items that were previously blurry take on all sorts of neat details. Tiled resources reportedly simulates this within a virtual world, freeing up resources for the system to use on other tasks.

"The motivation for doing something like this is to enable you to make games with unprecedented amounts of detail," said Antoine Leblond, vice president of Microsoft's Windows division, at today's Build conference."

so by "right" it should work on most FPS games? can anyone confirm it? Thanks :)

If it's that troublesome then by all means go and get the 16GB; I have it. I don't see any real argument against that. I still forsee 8GB being more than enough for the next year but within 4-5, yes that could definitely change. I say get the ram now then, but consider that in 4-5 years DDR4 will be coming out and who knows what that means for gaming; so that could be one argument against spending on too much ddr3 ram now. I think the benefit of having the extra ram for $60-$80 more or whatever the price difference is negligible when you are spending nearly $1k on upgrades. So, yeah, go for it!

Since this isn't set to release until fall, there won't be any data to substantiate any arguments unless you work with or for direct x and know what's being developed. This said, obviously you can prepare by having more ram. I think it will be a while before it becomes prevalent enough to pump up system requirements as devs for different companies will have to now adjust to this new ability. It will take some time for it to trickle to enough main stream games before 8GB min requirements become made and will at best be in the recommended bracket probably for a while. I have 16GB so I feel good for now but who knows. Tech sometimes moves way faster than expected but even then I'd say we'd have at least a year and that would be crazy fast. To speculate how long before 8GB min req are for sure is all conjecture at this point so I'll leave it at that.
This will apply to any graphically intense games that can utilize high textures whether they be fps, rpg, rts, or whatever. How well this is executed will be up to developers; it sounds very promising! We will see!
My 2cents!

Thanks,

Justin S.

Hi Justin :)

i guess it still to early to say... i upgrade my pc every 4-5 years, been using AMD Phenom II 955 BE with 8GB till now and i hardly hit over 4GB of ram usage as i don't do any photo or video editing... my next pc will be up coming Intel Haswell Refresh cpu. was planning to go with 8GB of ram too but after i read about 'tiled resources'... will 8GB be enough? u might say buy another 8GB later on... but it kind of troublesome on my side... so i prefer not to upgrade my pc once i built it.

Thanks :)

yes that's what ppl told me the same thing 4 years back... go for the extra 4GB(~$90) make it 8GB total, u will need more ram 4-5 years down the road... till today that extra 4GB sitting in my pc idle all this time which is not "Cost Efficiency". i might have got a better gpu card or something that is well spend.

that's why i want to find out more about DirectX 11.2 'tiled resources' before i jumping for the "extra 8GB" of ram. hopefully, there will be some data out before Haswell Refresh is out :)

Thanks :)
