Hi guys
I need desperate help
I've got an external hard drive (3TB) & have important data I can't lose on it
Firstly the main board died on the casing, so I've bought a new external closure
I have a laptop with windows 8 (touch screen) & every time I try to access the external hard drive it keeps saying cannot use the device until it is formatted....
I don't have another enclosure to try or desktop to plug it in to to test if it is working properly
Can anyone help me please?!???
Thanks

When external hard drive asks for format, it is most likely that it is corrupted. To fix it, you may try this step by step tutorial: http://goo.gl/mIOJLp

Another thing you can try is to check whether hard drive is infected by virus, this is because that sometimes virus may cause external hard drive logical table to be corrupted which may cause system to show the message. So you may try to scan the hard drive with anti-virus software, Microsoft security essential is good

You may also try AVG free, Notorn or McAfee

If the hard drive does not show up as a drive letter, you may go to device manager and then assign a drive letter to the external hard drive
