hey guys i got a amd r9 290 graphics card about a month ago, and am running an amd fx 6300 processor with it. my concern is that the cpu is bottlenecking my graphics card. i was looking maybe to get the corsair h80i water cooler, and try to overclock my processor to 5ghz. i wasnt sure quite if my motherboard could handle that or not. also how much of a performance boost would i be gaining, maybe 10fps or so?

Laviniu has a good point. The 290 stock will use of much of the 300W TDP as it can. The 6300 is a 95W part, but if you OC it you can also hit 150W. That PSU has around 550W total on the 12V rail. 300 + 150 + 50 = 500W. OCs work with stable power, and if you cross that 150W for the CPU you can find yourself out of juice pretty quick.

I also don't see the point of the 8320. In most games the 8320 and the 6300 should be fairly close. Worse, it has a higher TDP and will cause power issues. Try it, but don't be surprised if you need to make some changes. (I haven't looked, but I'm not sure the 80i can do what you want.
I have heard complaints by fx-6300 owners that they can are getting slightly bottlnecked. I'd just sell the fx-6300 and get a fx-8320 and do a mild overclock.

However, that mobo is a low end 970 mobo, which means you shouldn't expect much out of the overclock. With great cooling and a fx-6300 I'd expect around 4.3GHz.

that's close to the limit of the psu... graphics alone can take up to 250-300W, 120-150W for the overclocked cpu and it's close.

the overclock might be limited also by the psu but you can try. a custom cooler is always a good idea (maybe stick to air cm 212 evo if you have room in the case and good airflow) get it and you can try overclocking in small steps, if it's unstable you find out fast in prime95+furmark, dial back and use the fastest one stable

sorry my bad, aftermarket is what i meant,

i think he could get away with a cheaper air cooler instead of the h80i since the overclock gets unstable due to motherboard/psu limitations before the heat is an issue

I don't like overclocking a fx-6300 + 290 on a 600W PSU. A 290 recommends a 650W PSU which is overkill but we all know AMD CPUs are very power hungry.

I would like to say that I erred on saying the mobo is bad. I missed the "U" in the name. and thought it was 4+1 phases instead of 8+2 phases.

I love AMD, don't get me wrong. But I don't think you will be able to run a 290 without using an i5 or better. Which in this case means getting an FX-8xxx processor and overclocking IT. The 6300 just isn't up to the job ONLY in the case of CPU intensive games.

alright i probs wont overlock then. maybe just get a liquid cooler for shits and giggles. maybe somewhere is the future ill get a new motherboard, psu, and a amd 9590 cpu or something. i just dont want to fry my computer from overdrawing power.

Dude a 9590 is just an overclocked 8350. Pulls 225w or more.
