I recently tried to download a torrent and stupidly clicked on the big glossy fake looking "download" pop up on the page with the torrent link.

I was then asked to download a programme called "Download Lite" which i did some brief research on and decided to go ahead and download it as i didn't have any programmes to download a torrent.

now my mac is running very slow and the programme won't work unless i download java which i didn't. Im also getting a lot of pop ups.

I dragged the programme to the trash then emptied it but my mac is still acting up with pop ups and slower speeds.

Any insight on my problem would be much appreciated.

Try running a disk cleaning software, to see if it can find the files that were left behind.
for example:
http://www.avg.com/ca-en/avg-cleaner-for-mac
but if that doesn't work try looking through your login items (located in system preferences, under users & groups) to see if there is anything suspicious that is launching at start up.
If you still can't find the files, try running a virus scan (if you don't have an antivirus program, use Avast, or ClamXav). Remember, there may be a chance that none of these programs are able to locate the files
If you still need a torrent downloader, use uTorrent, it works perfectly, and isn't a virus.
